Welcome to the Austin Chapter of the Society for Technical Communication.
Each year, STC Austin conducts a survey to understand compensation and benefits in Austin. The survey is open to all technical communicators in the Austin area, whether current STC members or not. Janet Swisher will present the survey results—with additional analysis—at the May STC Austin chapter meeting (Thursday, May 23, 2013 from 6:30 to 8pm).

I had the opportunity to visit the Austin chapter in November 2012 and lead a program meeting discussion about Five Dysfunctions of a Team. I was impressed by the lively discussion as we shared our ideas and approaches to improving teamwork. Through this discussion, we were able to learn from each other and explore ideas I have collected.
Events that facilitate the exchange of ideas are a vital part of STC. As colleagues, we challenge each other to find better ways to solve problems, and then to share those ideas and solutions. I am impressed and inspired by how our community members share their ideas, debate various approaches, and help each other find new solutions. These communities, combined with the many educational offerings organized by STC, bring a vast amount of knowledge to the technical communication industry.
The leaders of tomorrow need to be well versed in methods for understanding the people around them. The core of the HDO Master of Arts degree provides training in identifying and solving organizational problems. This professional graduate degree is designed specifically for local, national, and international leaders in the business and nonprofit sectors. For that reason, all HDO courses emphasize the real-world applications of the humanities, social sciences, and behavioral sciences. Each graduate course provides depth in an area of study as well as practical exercises that demonstrate how to use this knowledge in everyday settings.
HDO’s degree program leverages the core knowledge within the Liberal Arts to instill in students a thorough understanding of the people they interact with everyday, be that interaction face-to-face, virtual, or through outreach and marketing. This cutting-edge degree will improve its students’ abilities to lead, manage, and innovate.
